Presenting to you book number#2 of the trilogy called obnoxiously-well-off-and-spoilt-rich-asians I mean Crazy Rich Asians.
China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan is still full of the same amount narcissism, glitz and glamour, melodramatic and stuck-up family members, with a touch of too much money like the first one I reviewed. I was head over heels in love with it because of the completely comic and crazy the story so not commonly found, however this was just alright, click here to read it.
Anyway the story begins with a vague mention of a Ferrari crashing into a Jimmy Choo store in London – typical and totally normal – both the driver and passenger aren’t mentioned or the damage done. However soon enough we get to know about the reckless driver who is the cause of one girl’s death, a liability to a big shot tycoon’s political career in Mainland China and half brother to a sister he never knew existed.
But let’s track back to our favorite duo: Rachel Chu and Nick Young, who’re about to get married and preparations are well under way to sabotage it by his wealthy family (who’re not invited except for Astrid of course). Cutting them off after the throw down involving his mother, grand-mother and the love of his life Rachel, his mother still manages to make a dramatic entrance via a helicopter destroying the wedding venue only to come bearing news of Rachel’s long lost father in China – who happens to be pretty famous.
Thus begins Rachel’s unplanned honeymoon in China, discovering the billionaire class of this part of the world just a tad bit different from Singapore, with the same pomp and show, and enthusiasm for food. Getting to know her father’s family is not easy, add in a famous Insta-celebrity connected to the family makes the matter even more scandalous and dangerous. Amid a poison attempt, a gold digger attempting her hand at a good marriage, a love triangle absolutely RIDICULOUS, a much needed reality check/talk down, and a real life king maker for the Elitest of the Elites, this surely hits all the notes that made the predecessor famous.
Your head will spin, you’ll roll your eyes, then have them wide open over the drama, and chuckle to your devilish mind’s delight with this one if you can stand the same amount of materialism and over-the-top habits as in the previous one. For me it was just a bit too much and found only a few parts really interesting.
However, Mr.Kevin Kwan, it takes one to be one in order to diss the rest *wink wink*
